Subtle Modality and Epistemic Stance
Lesson 6: Subtle Modality and Epistemic Stance.
1. Overview
In professional and academic discourse, expressing varying levels of commitment to a statement (hedging and boosting) is critical.
2. Advanced Hedging (Lowering Certainty / Nuance)
- Adverbial phrases: Admittedly, presumably, allegedly, reportedly.
- Modal structures: Bound to be, reputedly, purported to be.
- Example: The algorithm is **reportedly** capable of handling peak volumes.
- Example: Price action is **bound to** encounter resistance at this key psychological level.
3. Advanced Boosting (Expressing Strong Conviction)
- Beyond a shadow of a doubt, unequivocally, inherently.
- Example: The underlying cryptographic protocol is **inherently** secure.
4. Practice Exercise
Rephrase the sentences to include the hedging/boosting expression in parentheses:
1. The market will reverse at this support line. (bound to)
2. The system leaked sensitive data during the audit. (allegedly)
